You're more likely to find the best person if you and your applicants have a clear understanding of the job that needs to be done, the hours and place of work, and the desired knowledge, personal characteristics, skills, experience, and qualifications for the job.<\/p>\n\n
For this reason, one of the typical first steps is to write a job description.<\/p>\n\n

Let's imagine that Hemi has a small business that mainly focuses on building and repairing decks and other outdoor structures. His business is growing and he needs to take on another carpenter.<\/p>\n\n
Before he can advertise, he needs to a develop a job description. Obviously, the main part of the job is the actual building of structures, so he writes that down first: <\/p>\n\n

Undertake multiple projects including building, repairs, and maintenance.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
He is careful to not be too specific (i.e. limiting the work to deck building) in case he diversifies his business at some point.<\/p>\n\n
He wants the new carpenter to be left alone to do work, so he includes a couple of statements about that:<\/p>\n\n

Ordering of materials as and when required.<\/em><\/li>\n\t
Coordinating and liaising with customers, contractors, inspectors, etc.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
And, lastly, he wants to set a tone that he takes compliance really seriously, so he includes that in this section as well:<\/p>\n\n

Ensuring that company protocols and processes are being adhered to at all times, including Health and Safety and Environmental compliance.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

He's happy with these points. He doesn't need to go overboard, but he has listed off the duties and tasks that he feels are most important to him.<\/p>\n\n

Hemi really needs someone who is experienced and can hit the ground running. He's not after a junior labourer or apprentice at this stage, so he needs to stipulate this:<\/p>\n\n

Minimum of 5 years carpentry experience in residential and\/or commercial projects.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
He also can't afford to provide a vehicle and all the tools. It is common practice that carpenters will provide their own tools (he can incentivise the package by providing an allowance for tools as part of the remuneration and rewards):<\/p>\n\n

Must have a full set of carpenter tools and own reliable transport.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
And, then again, he can reiterate that the employee needs to be able to work unsupervised and be responsible:<\/p>\n\n

Ability to work autonomously and with high attention to detail.<\/em><\/li>\n\t
Holds Health and Safety in highest regard.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

There are other things he could have included, such as qualifications or other skills, but he feels that this list gives him a good balance and communicates the fact that he wants someone who is experienced and can just 'get on with the job' with no problems.<\/p>\n\n
These two sections adequately describe the 'job', however, Hemi also wants to use this job description to advertise the position.
